What is the ISI
The Indigenous Summer Institute (ISI) is a free program for Indigenous high school students aged 15 to 18, hosted at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). It is designed to offer participants the experiences and aspects of campus life as a USask student. Participants can expect to sleep in dorms, eat at the University cafeteria, and engage in fun hands-on activities with various colleges and units!
Additionally, participants will explore the beautiful City of Saskatoon through activities such as visiting museums, eating at various restaurants, and catching a movie.
Background
Established by the Office of the Vice Provost, Indigenous Engagement (OVPIE), the Indigenous Summer Institute was imagined by Dr. Angela Jaime (PhD), USask’s Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement. Dr Jaime helped to start a similar program while she was at the University of Wyoming. The University of Saskatchewan’s Indigenous Summer Institute successfully piloted in August of 2024 and will be hosted annually.
The purpose of the Institute is to increase exposure and access to pathways toward post-secondary education, establish mentorship opportunities for Indigenous students, increase cultural connections, strengthen communication, academic, and relationship building skills through shared experiences, and inspire high-school aged Indigenous youth to pursue post-secondary opportunities
